Reading

Beckett near his reading nook, choosing books!

Beckett near his reading nook, choosing books!

Can I just say that Beckett is suuuper into reading! This makes me sooo happy! Truly, what a lifesaver this has been….

Let’s talk more about what reading has done for our daily routine and evening structure. He loves to read. It was not always this way.

In the beginning, I wondered if I was doing it right or why he couldn’t sit still to read an entire book even when I flipped through the pages fast and ad-libbed to keep his interest.

Looking back on it, I think a big part was his age at the time and the consistency of keeping up on the reading and not giving up! Doing these things have all paid off. Reading has grown into a sheer passion for Beckett. He gravitates to his books throughout the day - even when I am doing laundry or other things around the house. I’m always surprised at his interest. However; I am enlightened to stop what I’m doing and read a book with him.

It doesn’t take long and it has been a welcome intermission throughout the day for me!

Actually, I think the real zeal came in the car seat. I finally started giving Beckett books in the car for any commuting we were planning that day. This turned into a true independence of him getting super interactive with books, really absorbing everything on the page. What a gift this has been.

Currently, some of our favorite books are: I Love You Stinky Face (actually the entire Stinky Face Series), B is for Bedtime, Dick & Jane Collection, Down by the Bay, ABC, Vehicles, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star just to name a few….

Lately, I have been thinking of this famous quote a lot when I read to Beckett.

“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one.” George R. R. Martin
