Setting the Stage

Beckett’s Room

Beckett’s Room

When Beckett first began sleeping through the night, I’ll be the first to admit, I didn’t do it alone. I had help!

I was suffering from an error made during my c-section and I required a second surgery 9 days after to repair a colon obstruction. Due to the stress of the second surgery and the effects of losing quite a bit of breast milk supply, we hired a night nurse.

This was an answered prayer! Our night nurse was my angel sent to help me at an extremely difficult time.

One of the most important things I learned from our night nurse was about Calories!

I had never thought about calories and how it related to babies much less about babies sleeping through the night.

As I learned more, a light bulb went off and I realized babies need enough nutrients throughout the day in order to sleep through the night… 😁 Our night nurse stressed over and over again how important it is, calories = sleep.

We chose to supplement my dwindling supply with formula and it was the best decision we could have made at the time.

After just a few days of feeding Beckett consistently throughout the day and before bedtime, he began sleeping 10 + hours and then on to 12 + hours a night. It was the miracle I needed….

We then set the stage in Beckett’s room. Doing our best to create a cozy sanctuary and additionally, investing in a blackout curtain and sound machine. These things really made a difference (quick fix: if you cannot afford a blackout curtain, black trash bags taped to the window work equally as well, if not better)!

I also wished to incorporate Beckett. After all this is his room! He loves both cars and wild animals… So, I found this great vintage mobile and a cute laundry hamper and giraffe that I thought wrapped in everything he loves yet without clashing.

Next, we worked on a consistent nighttime routine. Dinner, playtime, bath, reading and then bedtime around the same time each night. The consistency is key! A few hours downtime before bed is just what the doctor ordered in order to feel complete before saying goodnight.
